1SA 2019 - 2020
Welcome to 1SA's class page!
Hi my name is Miss Allan and this is my fifth year teaching at Offley Primary Academy and it is my second year teaching Year 1, which I am thoroughly excited about. I coordinate Science with Mrs Till and we are already looking forward to our next Science week here at Offley. I am passionate about embracing practical opportunities for the children to expand their learning by making lessons fun. At home I love spending time with my two dogs; especially my pug Darcy, I also thoroughly enjoy craft projects. 1SA is also very lucky to have Mrs Perry spending some time in our class during the week. Each week I will update our class page and share 1SA's learning journey with you all.
1SA’s P.E slots take place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their P.E. kit for each of these days.
Children are prompted to change their reading book each day, if they have read their book. We encourage children to read at least four times a week and they will receive a sticker for this, consistent reading each week will enable children to receive the reading treat at the end of term.
Once again we will be hosting Science week in school. This event allows our pupils to get involved with hands on experiments and listen to science and engineering professionals. We want to engage pupils in jobs for the future and this is a great insight for them, so please come and share your skills and passion for science and engineering. Examples of previous helpers:
• Structural engineers doing a hands on experiment teaching how to make structures out of spaghetti and paper
• Nurse – teaching children first aid
• Forensic team - setting up a crime scene and getting the children to solve the crime
These are just a few of the ideas that we have had in previous years, so if you know anyone who could spare half a day or even an hour, then we would love to hear from you. Please call the school office on 01270 685355 to express your interest or email firstname.lastname@example.org or see Miss Allan or Mrs Till.
Science week is Monday 9th March – Friday 13th March 2020
We have had a super week here in 1SA!
In maths, we have continued to explore length and height. We began the week by creating our own rulers, which we then used to measure objects around the classroom, focusing on accuracy. We then moved onto measuring objects from different starting points using the stem sentence “we always count from the object’s starting point.’
In English, we have been getting to know the main characters in our class text, The lion Inside. In teams we sorted vocabulary for each of the characters, thinking carefully about which adjectives matched each character. After this, we formed sentences using ‘and’ to join adjectives together.
In Geography, we found out where the rainforests are in the world and shaded them onto maps.
In art, we evaluated a piece of Edward Tingatinga’s artwork, thinking about the colours used, how it made us feel and what our favourite parts were.
In French, we learnt a traditional French nursery rhyme ‘Les Petits Poison Dans L’eau’. We learnt what it meant in English and sang it together as a class. https://www.youtube.com/embed/001VkA88o_I?autoplay=1&controls=1&showinfo=0&showsearch=0&modestbranding=1&rel=0&autohide=1&iv_load_policy=3&version=2&wmode=transparent&theme=light
In science, we had so much fun exploring our senses including which body part each of the senses is associated with. We identified each of the different senses and used them to identify objects in the classroom.
During our class assembly time this week, we explored Road Safety. How we should behave around roads and the danger that they pose. Here is a link to a video we used to support us. https://www.think.gov.uk/resource/crossing-roads/
