6KW 2021/2022

Miss Warren

Hello, my name is Miss Warren and this is my third year teaching at Offley and I am really excited to be staying in year 6 :-) After graduating with a degree in Education Studies, I completed the first half of my teacher training here at Offley and could not wait to become part of the team at this amazing school. In my spare time, I love travelling and ticking destinations off my bucket list, my next one (hopefully) being Venice! I also enjoy spending time with my friends, family and my very mischievous dog Tyson (who is always causing havoc in my house). I am also the D&T lead here at Offley :-)

We are also very lucky to have the lovely Mrs. Walkley supporting both classes every morning!

Autumn Term Information

This term, our topic will be World War II!

Our text this half term is 'Can we save the tiger?' by Martin Jenkins. This is a visually stunning and informative picture book about the world's endangered animals.

Each week I will update the website with information about what is currently being covered. I will also upload any homework or spellings given out that week. If you have any questions or queries feel free to see me at the end of the school day or contact me through the school office. Admin will then forward on any messages or arrange meetings at a mutually convenient time.

PE- This will take place on a MONDAY afternoon. The children will need indoor and outdoor kit.

Guided Reading - Every Friday we will teach a designated guided reading session that will use high quality texts linked to our usual English lessons.

Times tables tests - These will take place every Thursday morning.

Week ending 28.01.22

The children have continued to work hard this week and we have even enjoyed some lessons learning together as a year group!

In English this week, we have finished our text, The Selfish Giant.  Many of the children were shocked by the twist at the end and we had lots of discussions around who the little boy could have been and we made comparisons between the book and other stories.  The children have enjoyed being able to link this to their Guided Reading text, The Happy Prince, which is also by Oscar Wilde.  We identified the key events in the text and discussed the feelings of the different characters during each of these events.  At the end of the week, we planned our retelling of this story, which we will write next week.

In maths, we have been focussing on the mean.  We have spent lots of time looking at sharing objects and numbers equally to help the children to understand what this concept means.  We then practised finding the mean of sets of numbers by adding up the numbers within the set and dividing by the amount of numbers within the set.  We used the STEM sentences below to help us:

To challenge our understanding, we then calculated a missing number in a set when given the rest of the numbers and the mean.  We worked this out in the following way:

In geography, we worked in small groups to compare a region in North America with a region in England, looking at the climate and human and physical geography.

In science, we applied what we had learnt about classification to creating our own Field Guides for the school grounds.  We went out into the grounds and made lists of the plants and animals we could find.  We then classified these and organised them into a Field Guide.

In music, we continued to study how music can contribute to the mood of a film.  In RE, we looked at how Buddhists use shrines and what they typically contain.

Have a lovely weekend!
