Phonics
We follow the government's Letters and Sounds programme for teaching phonics, starting from phase 1 in pre-school through to Phase 6 in Year 2.
Here is a short video clip that shows the correct pronunciation of the sounds that we start with in phonics.
Phonics is taught daily, by the class teacher, to the whole class. Children who are identified as needing further support work in small phonics groups in additon to the whole class teaching of phonics.
Spellings are sent home every Friday based on the sounds learnt in class.
Towards the end of Year 1 children are screened using the National Phonics Screening Check. This assessment gathers information on the childrens ability to blend and segment decodable words to read, and their recognition of ‘tricky’ non decodable words.
